Ordering sparkling water at a restaurant or picking up a La Croix in place of a water bottle? Sparkling water’s (carbonated water or even bubbly water) popularity has increased because it feels like a refreshing alternative to still water. But as someone who consumes it regularly I was curious to find out, does it really hydrate me and as effectively as regular water?
The bubbles come from carbon dioxide, which is added under pressure, but this doesn’t change its ability to hydrate (phew! Good news for us bubbly water lovers).
What are the Benefits of Sparkling Water?
- Sugar and Calorie Free: Soft drinks and juices may often contain an abundance of sugar and sodium but sparkling water (make sure to look for the sodium free kind) is typically free of calories and sugars. This allows for a healthier way to hydrate and if you’re watching your weight and blood sugar levels this is an added bonus.Â
- Added Twist on Hydration: I get it! Water can be plain and boring and sparkling water levels up the fun and sometimes sophistication when out to dinner as an alcohol alternative. The fizz can make drinking water more appealing, encouraging you to drink more throughout the day.
- It’s Truly Versatile: Drink sparkling water on its own or enjoy it with a fun mix of other beverages. Adding in a dash of fruit juice (grapefruit/pineapple), a squeeze of lemon or lime, or a few garnishes like fresh berries help enhance the flavor without adding unnecessary sugars.
Take into Consideration Your Health:
There are a few key considerations to keep in mind, while sparkling water is generally a great hydration option, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Sodium Content: There are a few brands that contain added sodium and suggest reading labels even for water! Monitoring your sodium intake should be considered on a regular basis and be sure to check the label on the brand you choose to look for low or no sodium options.Â
Dental Considerations: Sparkling water tends to be bit more acidic than still water. Even though the acidity is mild it could potentially weaken enamel on our teeth over time, especially if larger volumes are consumed. The good news is, it is much less acidic than sugary sodas and flavored waters.Â
- Digestive Issues: For some people, the carbonation can cause bloating, gas, or discomfort in the stomach. Those with sensitive digestive systems or conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may find that sparkling water exacerbates their symptoms.
Exercise and Impact on Athletes: Sparkling water can hydrate just as well as regular water for most people, athletes or those who prefer intense physical activity might find that plain or still water is easier to consume in large amounts. Carbonation can sometimes replicate the feeling of bloating and fullness which may make it harder to stay appropriately hydrated during more strenuous or lengthier exercises.Â
- Of course, there are pros and cons to every decision we make in life but sparkling water can be a healthier alternative to sugary juices, sodas, and other flavored beverages. It’s important to be mindful of these potential downsides depending on your health needs and preferences (it varies person to person).Â
Here Are Some Healthier Alternatives to Sparkling Water:
Let’s keep you hydrated! Here are some other options to keep in mind
- Try Infusing Your Water at Home: By adding slices of cucumber, mint, citrus fruits, or berries to still water for a refreshing and flavorful drink without added sugars or calories.
- Cold & Hot Herbal Teas: Caffeine free teas, trying out different flavors, lemon, ginger, raspberries offer great alternatives all while keeping you hydrated!
Love for Coconut Water: coconut water is a great option and is a natural source of electrolytes, especially after exercise (my personal favorite).
In Conclusion
Yes, Sparkling water is hydrating and is a perfectly good choice and alternative to still water. But you can still have fun and enjoy sparkling water but remember the importance of staying hydrated. What I do throughout the day is alternate between sparkling and still water to keep my taste buds happy! With all that said, remain mindful of the acidity and sodium content.
