How to Identify and Prevent Mold in Your Home

•

Identifying mold can be particularly tricky. Because mold can start to grow and more often than not goes unnoticed throughout different areas of your home, especially in places where moisture levels are higher. Trying to identify mold early on can be critical for preventing potential health risks and even damage to your humble home. Here are some tips on how to spot mold and take action:

1. Mold Can Often Appear as a Visible Growth:
Mold can pop up on walls, ceilings, and even floors, or other surfaces as black, green, gray, or even white spots. It can often look like or be mistaken for dirt or soot but tends to return after cleaning if it’s mold. When cleaning my home I noticed on my bathroom counter what appeared to be darker water spots but when I cleaned them, they returned again after a few days. There was no odor but the color would change from white to dark brown and identified that it was mold after multiple rounds of cleaning.

Common mold growth areas included: bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and around windows- really any space with excess moisture.

2. Mold with a Musty Odor Means Easier Identification:
Mold typically emits a very distinct and musty smell. You may notice a continuous, earthy, or even damp odor (smells like you left a wet towel out for too long) in certain areas of your home, this could be a sign of growth which is often hidden even if you don’t see it.

3. Water Stains and Damage: Look out for water stains, discoloration in the paint on your walls (if you’ve ever come across those yellowing ceiling panels), dark spots or bubbling in the ceiling, and floors where the wood may be . These can be signs of leaks which tend to create ideal conditions for mold to grow. Bubbling or peeling wallpaper can also indicate moisture problems leading to mold.

4. Condensation and Moisture:
Frequent condensation on windows, pipes (homes or apartments that may have radiators), or walls suggests high indoor humidity, which encourages mold growth. Keep an eye on these areas and consider using a dehumidifier to maintain optimal humidity levels. As a resident of Florida humidity levels are high most of the year which can lead to mold growth. A suggestion is to keep air conditioning temperatures consistent throughout the day/night. If there are too many fluctuations in temperature this may also lead to condensation build up and cause mold.

5. Allergy Symptoms:
You or your family may experience unexplained symptoms which may be similar to allergies like sneezing, itching your eyes more, coughing that tends to get worse indoors, this could be an indication of mold hiding in your home/apartment. Symptoms may improve when away from home are a strong signal of potential mold issues. As someone who has a deviated septum, more often allergy symptoms tend to flare up and become worse around moldy areas and become even more sensitive.

Prevention Tips:

  1. Try and keep your home dry and clean
  2. Ventilation is key
  3. Regularly check out mold prone areas that were mentioned above
  4. Quickly address any leaks
  5. Use dehumidifiers to keep your home dry and reduce mold growth
